Why second status
One passport concentrates jurisdictional risk
For globally mobile founders, second citizenship and second residence aren't luxuries, they're risk management. Five reasons our clients come to us before the Canadian PR process is even done.
Travel mobility
A Caribbean CBI passport unlocks visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 140–150+ destinations including the UK, Schengen Area, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
Business continuity
When a primary passport faces sanctions, restrictions, or geopolitical disruption, a second citizenship keeps banking, deal-making, and travel functioning.
Tax treatment
Some jurisdictions offer favourable territorial tax treatment for non-domiciled residents. Cross-border structuring is essential before, not after, status changes.
Family security
A second status protects spouse and children, and in most CBI programs, can be passed to descendants by birthright.
Speed
Caribbean citizenship can complete in 4–8 months. Compared to Canadian PR's multi-year timeline, the gap matters when life decisions can't wait.
Optionality
Holding multiple statuses creates strategic flexibility, where to live, where to bank, where to incorporate, where to retire. Optionality is a real asset.
Five jurisdictions
Caribbean citizenship and global investor residence
We don't shortlist a jurisdiction until we understand the client's primary driver, speed, EU access, US treaty, tax planning, or diversification. The match matters more than the brochure.
Citizenship by investment
São Tomé & Príncipe
The fastest, lowest-cost citizenship in our practice.
São Tomé and Príncipe launched its citizenship-by-investment program in August 2025: a contribution from US$90,000 to the National Transformation Fund, citizenship in about two months (as fast as ~60 days), with no residency or interview requirement and files submitted through licensed agents. As the newest and lowest-cost program in our practice, we include it selectively and screen carefully for legitimacy and downstream banking acceptance.
What partners should know
1
Less established than Caribbean CBI programs, global recognition and banking acceptance are uneven.
2
Best fit when speed, cost, or jurisdictional diversity is the primary driver, not when a strong passport is the goal.
3
We perform extra-rigorous due diligence on São Tomé pathways before recommending to a client.
4
Often paired with a stronger second status (e.g. Caribbean CBI) rather than used as standalone.

Grenada
The only Caribbean CBI with US E-2 treaty access.

2

FAQ
What families ask before committing
What's the right jurisdiction for my client?+
It depends entirely on the primary driver. Caribbean CBI (St. Kitts, Grenada) is fastest and least demanding on residency. Portugal Startup Visa is the middle ground, EU residence at moderate cost, but requires building a real business. Panama is excellent for tax-aware founders. We won't shortlist a jurisdiction without understanding the actual goal first.
Are these passports legitimate?+
St. Kitts, Grenada, Portugal, and Panama are all government-regulated programs with international recognition and full diplomatic relations. São Tomé is the lightest-recognized of our five, we include it selectively and brief clients on banking-acceptance limitations. We do not work with unregulated or unrecognized programs.
How long does Caribbean CBI really take?+
St. Kitts and Grenada both publish 4–6 month processing times for standard applications. We typically see 5 months end-to-end when due diligence is clean. Files with flagged due-diligence findings can stretch to 8–10 months or be denied outright, which is why pre-screening matters.
Is there an investment route to EU citizenship?+
Not currently. Malta's investor-citizenship route was ruled contrary to EU law by the EU Court of Justice in 2025 and is closed. The realistic long-term path is residence that leads to naturalisation: Portugal's residence routes can build toward citizenship eligibility, though Portugal's 2026 nationality law extended the general qualifying period to ten years (seven for CPLP nationals). We scope this as a multi-year plan, not a purchase.
Does CanBizVisa provide tax or investment advice?+
No. We are business consultants who coordinate citizenship and residency programs. Tax-residency analysis and structuring counsel is provided by tax professionals we engage separately. Investment advice is provided by licensed financial professionals. We do not provide either.
Will this interfere with the Canadian PR process?+
Generally no, holding additional citizenships does not disqualify Canadian PR applications, and Canada permits dual / multiple citizenship. But disclosure obligations and tax-residency consequences can intersect in non-obvious ways. We coordinate with the client's Canadian RCIC or lawyer before any status change.
